Water-based concrete stains are suspensions of micro-fine or nano-pigments suspended in a water-based solution of penetrating and binding agents. Water-based stains work by actually flowing into and filling the concrete pores and bonding into the surface. Can Concrete Stain Be Removed or Lightened?
Because concrete stains only penetrate the top layer of the concrete, it will eventually fade, whether from weather or traffic. However, waiting for concrete stain to fade can take a significant amount of time. If you’ve stained the wrong area, aren’t pleased with your results, or just had a change of heart, never fear — there are several options to remove your concrete stain. If outdoors, you can use a sandblaster to remove the concrete stain. You can also use paint strippers, citrus strippers, and other strong chemicals to remove it (just be sure to air out the room and wear a mask and gloves). For smaller areas, you can also use an acid wash and a hard brush to remove the unwanted stain.
Can Concrete Stain Be Applied Over Sealer?
In short, no. When it comes to acid stains, it’s important that they be applied to a porous surface so that the chemicals in the stain can interact with the lime in the concrete. This means that if the concrete currently has paint or sealer on it, the acid stain will be unable to penetrate the surface and deposit the desired color. In this scenario, you have the choice of removing the current paint or sealer or even laying a thin layer of new concrete on top of the surface.
How Long Does Concrete Stain Take to Dry?
It’s important to note that the drying time for each concrete stain may vary, depending on the environment’s humidity, temperature, and air conditions. In the best circumstances, concrete stains will dry in about a half hour. However, it's a good idea to let stains cure for a full 24 hours. If, after that time, you would like to see more color payoff on your concrete surface, you can add additional layers of stain.
Can Old Concrete Be Stained?
In theory, there is no problem with staining older concrete surfaces, as long as they are clean. Some of the most common substances that soil concrete are oil, wax, sealers, grease, glue, and paint. If any of these are on your concrete surface, the stain will not be able to penetrate its surface and deposit the desired color. Be sure to rigorously clean any surface that you plan to stain, particularly if they aren’t made of fresh concrete.
