Solvent-Based Concrete Sealers

For those who prefer to work with a tried and true product, solvent-based concrete sealer can meet your application needs. With the ability to use both inside and outdoors, you are sure to find that solvent-based sealer can be easy to work with in the right applications.

What are the differences between water-based vs. solvent-based concrete sealers?

Solvent-based concrete sealers differ slightly from their water-based counterparts. The solvent-based solution is completely clear when applied and creates one of the shiniest surfaces possible when completely dried and cured.

Unlike water-based sealers, solvent-based sealers do not have any water present. This means the polymers are already closer together when applied. As the product dries, the polymer link comes closer together to create a harder surface.

Additionally, solvent-based concrete sealers do have a harsh odor. If being used in an unventilated area, a respirator is recommended to ensure no damage or sensitivity to the respiratory system.

Furthemore, solvent-based concrete sealer does take longer to clean up. The product can be flammable, so some care and attention is required after application. Additionally, it takes more than a wet rag to clean up a spill. It requires xylene, paint thinner, or acetone to clean up. However, the final result is incredibly similar to that of a water-based sealer.
