Using Integral Concrete Pigment Color Dyes

Tru Hue Integral Concrete Pigment is the easiest and most reliable way to achieve consistent, long-lasting color for your concrete projects. Whether you’re stamping, troweling, or finishing decorative concrete, Tru Hue offers versatility and ease of use for both professionals and DIYers. Tru Hue pigments are finely ground iron oxide pigments that mix directly into the concrete before it’s poured. This ensures the entire batch is colored evenly, eliminating surface-only color issues like visible chips or abrasions. Color intensity is based on pigment loading percentages:

  • 1% Loading (Economy): Soft, subtle hues perfect for stamped concrete, contrasting releases, borders, and stains. At just $16.50 per yard, this is a cost-effective option for large projects.
  • 2% Loading: Stronger colors that overcome the natural gray of concrete. Ideal for interior floors and broom/trowel finishes without additional color products.
  • 3–4% Loading: Bold, vibrant colors that make a statement. Best for machine-troweled or burnished finishes but may limit contrast for stamps and antique effects.

How to Order and Apply

  1. Measure Your Area:
    • Standard 4” concrete pours cover 80 square feet per yard.
    • Example: A 20’x30’ pad = 600 square feet ÷ 80 = 7.5 yards (round up to 8 bags).
  2. Simplified Ordering:
    • Tru Hue pigments come in pre-measured, repulpable paper bags (one bag per cubic yard). Simply match the number of bags to the yards of concrete being poured—no calculations needed.
  3. Mix and Pour:
    • Add the pigment bag directly into the ready-mix truck or during hand mixing.
  4. Test First:
    • Always perform a one-yard mockup to see the final cured color before starting your project. Color may vary due to screens, finishing techniques, and sealers.

FAQS

Integral Color FAQ
What is Tru Hue Integral Color used for?
Our Tru Hue Integral concrete dye is used for a wide variety of concrete applications, including concrete countertops, decorative concrete flatwork, tilt-up panels, cast stone, mortar and architectural concrete blocks.
How does integral color pigment work?
This concrete pigment is a mixture of colors that can either contain natural iron oxide powder or be made of synthetic pigments that act as a dye for concrete. The concrete dye colors are added into the concrete mix and poured to create beautiful floors, countertops and more.
What’s the difference between concrete stain and integral color?
Integral color imparts color all the way through the concrete, unlike concrete stains that react or deposit color to the surface. Having the color all the way through the concrete is better over time when chips or surface blemishes occur.
Is it better to use integral color dye or stain concrete?

Due to the fact that integral transfers color all the way through the material, they produce long-lasting, fade-resistant colors. This makes integral color dye an excellent choice for slabs that need to stand up to heavy traffic and abuse since chips in the color won't be as noticeable.

Stains are more useful when needing a multi color design.
